Bart's Ruby Burst Ring – Athenia Jewellery

Bart's Ruby Burst Ring

This was another one of those more unusual commissions. This time the customer gave me a design and a very specific stone layout to stick to. I also had the privilege of removing the old diamond inside the ruby and setting a new one.

This was one of those pieces that involve a lot of concentration over a long period of time, if this concentration wasn't constantly present I would have ended up with collets that were unable to be set, stones might have been broken or the customer wouldn't have been happy with the final result because it differed from the design.

The process of making something like this was a true joy, it isn't every day that I get to create something so elaborate with so many different intersecting aspects. Bringing all of the collets together, reducing the metal seen between the stones, ensuring the angles and positioning were correct were all problems that had to be solved. The most nerve racking one though was replacing the tube setting inside the ruby, a new diamond and setting was needed as the old one wasn't in such a great condition. I essentially had to rivet the new diamond into the ruby, a very delicate procedure.
