Joanna's Floral Platinum Ring – Athenia Jewellery

Joanna's Floral Platinum Ring

It isn't often that I am given complete freedom in the making and designing of a piece of jewellery, this was one of those occasions. The client said: "Here's a stone, make something nice with it out of platinum". I was struggling to come up with a design so I asked what the client's fiancé liked, I was told that she likes flowers. So, from there I drew the most crude design ever, I had the design in my head and I knew how to make it, so I did. Coincidentally I personally also love flowers and have taken thousands of pictures of them, the design came naturally, when I think about it with the drawing conveying the emotion of the finished piece more than the actual form of the ring. I don't actually have a photo of the design on hand but I'll see if I can find it.

The making of the collet was also a different experience, with the stone being a sort of cushion cut but with sharp corners. I was able to create an unusual rex collet which had a wonderful proportion and shape to it. The shank was done in a traditional style, using 3 wires to create a dainty looking, but surprisingly rigid ring. Finally, the leaves were made and carved, then blended into the shank which resulted in the feeling that the leaves were growing from it. The whole thing was tediously assembled to create a beautiful floral ring.

I didn't get a photo of the finished ring but I had to share this project because of how naturally it was created, fitting considering the subject.
