Gemma's Sapphire Snake Ring
The design that I did for this snake ring is the design that I am most proud of thus far in my career as a jeweller. Its a simple design but met all of the requirements, the budget and most of all, made the best use of the resources at hand.
The subject of this ring had to be a snake, more specifically an ouroboros, the stone had to be a sapphire with the client specifically asking for a pear shape. it also had to be in platinum or some other white metal, also the snake that I modelled the design from was the ASP viper.
Some of the curves present in this ring are shapes that I have never made before, so there was a lot of interesting fabrication techniques involved in handmaking this ring, from welding the platinum to carving the entire head using only a saw and some gravers.
Another thing worth mentioning is the unique setting style. The positioning of the stone had to be perfect so that it looked like the snake had a sapphire in between its jaws and was about to swallow it whole. Also the ring uses a unique setting that combines a rub over setting with a claw setting to secure the stone, the 2 claws were to be the snake's fangs.
